Climate change, especially prolonged drought events, reduce the availability of feed and water for livestock. This Decision Tool aims to help field level extension staff make climate smart decisions on which diet management option best suits their farmers’ context. This tool is not designed as a technical guide to implementation. It is designed to assist extension staff in making climate smart decisions on improvements to their farming systems with their farmers as clients. Reference to technical guides relevant to the practices and technologies outlined are included at the end of the tool. The tool focuses on some of the Best Bet Climate Smart Diet Management Options for Livestock production in the southern African development community (SADC) region

This report highlights key outputs of CCARDESA’s activities for the year 2018 which were crafted along with the five thematic areas of the Revised Medium-Term Operational Plan (20152018). The MTOP, in turn, derives its focus from key strategic regional documents such as the SADC Regional Agricultural Policy (RAP), the Regional Indicative and Strategic Development Plan (RISDP), the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).  

At the heart of the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho lie the highlands. Sitting between 2000 and 3500 metres above sea level, they channel water into the OrangeSenqu River which winds its way from Lesotho through South Africa and Namibia, with tributaries stretching as far as Botswana. It is a key source of water for Southern Africa’s most economically active region, supporting large-scale irrigation, industrial activities, hydropower, urban demand, and small-scale rural activities. South Africa’s highly developed economy draws most of the water, with Gauteng deriving over 32% of its water directly from Lesotho. This paper is a discussion of this resource base.

The brief discusses the key messages that transpired during the Conference on Scaling held on 29─30 November 2018 at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi, hosted by CCAFS SEA, co-hosted by ACIAR and GIZ, and funded by a CCAFS Small Grant Cross-CRP Networking. The conference main points include: scaling up agricultural innovations takes place in complex systems of agricultural transformation, and sustainable scaling should build into “sustainable change at scale”.

In an effort to serve as a 'one stop shop' for climate-related information, data, and tools, the World Bank created the Climate Change Knowledge Portal (or CCKP). The Portal provides an online tool for access to comprehensive global, regional, and country data related to climate change and development.

Deficiency in vitamin A is one of the most prevalent problems in Sub-Saharan African countries including Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. The consequences of deficiency of vitamin A is high fatality rate (60%) but even sub-clinical deficiency is associated with a 23% increase in preschooler mortality in areas with endemic Vitamin A deficiency”. An array of solutions have been proposed to combat Vitamin A deficiency. These have included Vitamin A capsule administration campaigns in pre-schools and primary schools unfortunately this has left behind others.
